Website maintenance and improvements

Website maintenance covers agreed updates, fault correction and useful improvements to existing websites and online stores. Takeover begins with technical condition, access and backup checks. A clear work plan distinguishes recurring tasks from separately approved changes and explains how completed work is verified.Discuss website maintenanceExplore this service

SERVICE ASSESSMENT

Website maintenance readiness diagnostic

Assess readiness for updates, recovery, operation and work management of an existing site. This answer-based assessment does not confirm that the site has no vulnerabilities.

AT A GLANCE

A clear starting point

Who it is for

Businesses needing ongoing care for an existing website or store and an organised process for approved improvements.

What we need to start

Provide technology, key function, known issue and licence information so the project can be assessed for takeover.

What you receive

Receive a clear maintenance plan, verified changes and a work summary with outcomes and next priorities.

WHO IT IS FOR

How do we take over an existing website?

Website maintenance is ongoing work to keep agreed features operating. It may include updates, backup checks and small changes. A large new module, detailed security audit or substantial redesign must be defined separately.

We gather information about the content management system, theme, plugins, custom code and hosting. Domain ownership, server administration and active licences are checked. An administrator login alone is not enough: we need to understand how the site is built and who can restore its operation.

Your team provides a list of important functions, known problems and earlier changes. The result is a condition review and initial remediation priorities. Replacing obsolete components, recovering missing access or repairing a substantial fault is assessed separately from routine work. This gives the maintenance plan a factual starting point.

SCOPE

Which tasks are performed regularly?

Recurring tasks follow the website’s importance and functions. They may include component updates, availability checks, form or purchase scenarios and backup-status reviews. Each task has an agreed frequency and expected outcome rather than a general promise to look after the website.

  • A detailed security assessment with a findings report and vulnerability fixes is agreed as a separate website security service.

Which tasks are performed regularly?

A successful backup job and a successful restore are different checks. We therefore describe what is copied, where it is stored and whether a restore exercise is included. Monitoring also has boundaries: a loading homepage does not demonstrate that a customer can submit an enquiry. Important user actions belong in a defined verification scope.

How are WordPress and WooCommerce websites maintained?

For WordPress, we consider compatibility between the core, theme, plugins and custom additions. Significant updates are prepared with a current backup, a test environment and a rollback plan. Principal actions are checked in the test version before the assessed update set is applied to production.

For a WooCommerce store, checks cover a product, basket, purchase, payment status and relevant messages. Database or integration changes may require additional verification. You identify commercially sensitive periods and a responsible contact. On completion, we report the changed components, checked behaviour and any unresolved dependencies.

WooCommerce’s update guidance covers staging tests and backups; the specific verification plan depends on the store’s features.

Website speed optimisation

Website speed optimisation starts with the pages and visitor actions that matter: viewing content, using the menu, submitting a form or making a purchase. Measurements help us identify how server response, images, fonts, scripts and website components contribute to delays. We prioritise the work by its impact and agree on the scope of optimisation.

We record a baseline, check changes in a test environment and repeat the measurements under comparable conditions. We also verify affected functions, such as forms, language switching or checkout. The work summary records the changes, measurement results and remaining limitations. A PageSpeed score helps diagnose problems; it does not guarantee the same performance for every visitor or a particular search ranking.

How should you interpret website speed and PageSpeed metrics?

How are faults corrected and new features developed?

A useful fault report identifies the page, actions taken, observed result and expected behaviour. We reproduce the issue, investigate its cause and propose a correction. Where an external provider is involved, our changes are distinguished from questions that provider must resolve.

A new feature starts with its purpose, user scenario and acceptance condition. Work can use agreed development hours or a separate project scope. We confirm the work before starting and show how to verify it on completion. A substantial redesign or new commerce module receives its own assessment so essential maintenance is not displaced.

How does maintenance differ from a security assessment?

Updates, access administration and operational checks support everyday maintenance. A comprehensive security assessment has a separate purpose, authorised boundaries, methods and findings report. Successfully installing an update does not establish that every security concern has been investigated.

Unexpected administrator accounts, redirects or suspicious files require an initial review and an agreed response. Wider investigation and remediation are planned through the website security service. Ownership authorisation and a clear assessment scope are necessary; submitting a public website address alone does not authorise active security testing.

How we work

Each stage defines the work, your input and the result to check.

01

Reviewing project condition and access

We review technology, access, licences and existing backups. You supply key functions and known issues, producing an initial condition assessment.

02

Agreeing takeover work and the plan

We separate essential takeover work from recurring tasks. You approve priorities and scope, giving the maintenance plan explicit inclusion criteria.

03

Preparing backups and testing

We prepare backup, testing and rollback procedures. Your team confirms important user journeys so they can be checked before a significant change.

04

Maintenance and approved changes

We perform planned tasks and separately approved improvements. You provide specific requests, and completion is supported by the agreed scenario check.

05

Work reports and priority reviews

We provide a work summary and priorities for remaining issues. Together we review changing website needs and decide what should happen next.

How are a maintenance plan and responsibilities agreed?

The plan reflects the technology, technical condition, important functions and required service scope. The proposal separates recurring tasks, development time and individually assessed changes. Where hours are included, we define recording, task approval and the treatment of unused time.

We also identify the reporting contact, service hours and the process for urgent work. Hosting, domains, paid plugins and external services are separate cost components. Response targets reflect the website’s importance and required support scope. Your team knows where to report an issue, who assigns priority and who approves additional work.

What does a maintenance report tell you?

A report should explain the site’s condition and support the next decision. It records the task, changed component, tested scenario and outcome. Deferred work, reasons for deferral and decisions needed from you or a supplier are listed separately.

Performance measurements identify the page, date, tool and conditions so later checks can be compared sensibly. Priorities follow their effect on visitors and business functions, keeping the next work list practical and justified.

Illustrative scenario: an update with a checkout test

This is an illustrative maintenance record. The task is to update a store component, with payment compatibility identified as an important risk. A test purchase checks order status and notifications in staging. Deployment to the live store is planned only after that scenario has been assessed.

The report records the updated version, test outcome and location of the rollback plan in team documentation. A failed scenario receives an explanation and a next action. Your team can see why an update was completed or deferred and which decision is needed next.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A takeover is possible after assessing technology, code condition, access and licences. Initial problems and remediation are described separately. We cannot promise identical support terms for every project in advance.

Some updates can be automated, but important features need compatibility and functional checks. The right approach depends on the website. A successful update alone does not establish that every payment or form works.

Only to the extent defined in the plan. Recurring tasks, included hours and separately assessed features must be distinguished. A large new module or redesign is not automatically a minor maintenance task.

This can be planned around agreed purchase scenarios. The scope and use of test payment facilities must be identified. Website availability alone does not prove that the full checkout journey works.

Known infection or suspected vulnerabilities first require a separate assessment. Such work may fall under website security testing and remediation rather than a routine update plan.

Response windows and urgency priorities are defined in the proposal. An initial reply and final resolution are different, because the cause may lie in hosting, code or an external provider.

These expenses are included only where explicitly stated in the proposal. The service name does not establish payment for hosting, domains, licences or third-party services.

The task, estimated scope and acceptance criteria are agreed before work begins. This separates a bug fix from a new feature and helps avoid unclear costs. Completed work should be presented in an understandable report.
